Kia and Hyundai have announced a recall affecting a total of 333,590 vehicles due to a defect that may lead to the melting of the fuel tank. The recall encompasses 250,547 Kia K5 vehicles from model years 2021 to 2024 and 85,043 Hyundai Sonata vehicles from model years 2020 to 2023, specifically those equipped with 1.6-liter turbocharged engines. This information was detailed in documents submitted to the U.S. Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The defect arises from a damaged check valve that can permit air to enter the fuel tank. This situation can cause the tank to expand and make contact with hot exhaust components, resulting in melting. To address this issue, dealers will inspect the check valve and replace it if necessary. Additionally, the fuel tank assembly will be examined for any damage and replaced as required. The engine control unit software will also be inspected and updated to ensure safety.
All repairs related to this recall will be conducted at no cost to the vehicle owners. Notifications to owners are scheduled to be mailed out on January 16, 2026, for both Kia and Hyundai brands.
