A woman unexpectedly gave birth inside a Waymo robotaxi while en route to the University of California San Francisco Hospital earlier this week. This unusual incident highlights the growing role of autonomous vehicles in everyday life, even in critical moments.
The woman was already in labor when she entered the Waymo vehicle, which is known for operating without a human driver. As the ride progressed, Waymo’s Rider Support Team noticed “unusual activity” in the car. Recognizing the situation, the team quickly contacted the woman and determined that she required immediate assistance. They promptly called 911 on her behalf.
Despite the urgent circumstances, the robotaxi successfully arrived at the hospital with the woman and her newborn before emergency services could reach them. Jess Berthold, a spokesperson for the University of California San Francisco Hospital, confirmed to NBC News that both mother and baby arrived safely. However, further details about the new family remain private, as the mother has chosen not to grant interviews.
Waymo issued a statement expressing pride in being a reliable option for riders during significant life events. The company said, “We wish the new family all the best, and we look forward to safely getting them where they’re going through many of life’s events.” Following the incident, Waymo took immediate action by removing the vehicle from service for cleaning.
While robotaxis are not without their challenges, including safety concerns and technical mishaps, they have demonstrated a strong safety record overall. Data indicates that Waymo’s autonomous vehicles are generally safer than human drivers. One physician even described the technology as “a public health breakthrough,” as the robotaxi maintained focus on driving during the birth.
In this case, the Waymo vehicle did not speed or make reckless decisions, which can sometimes occur with human drivers in emergencies. Although an ambulance is typically the preferred choice for transport during childbirth, the high cost of ambulance services may make a Waymo ride an appealing alternative for some.
This incident raises intriguing questions about the future of transportation, particularly in critical scenarios. As autonomous vehicles continue to evolve, their ability to navigate various life events safely will be closely monitored by both the public and industry experts.
