Miriam “Mimi” C. Brody, a beloved figure in the Torrance community, passed away on August 10, 2025, at the age of 98. Surrounded by family and music, she left behind a legacy of dedication and service that spanned more than five decades. Her contributions to the local community, particularly through her volunteer work at Torrance Memorial Medical Center, have left a lasting impact.
Mimi’s Journey Through Life and Service
Born in Los Angeles in 1927, Mimi spent her formative years in southern California, except for a pivotal period during her college education at the University of California, Berkeley. After completing her studies, she returned to southern California, where she met her husband, Robert “Bob” Brody. In the late 1960s, the couple moved to Torrance to support Bob’s career at Harvey Aluminum.
Once settled in Torrance, Mimi discovered her passion for helping others through volunteer work at Torrance Memorial Medical Center. Over the years, she took on numerous roles, including serving as past president of the Auxiliary and co-managing the hospital gift shop multiple times. Her commitment extended to volunteering in the outpatient pharmacy and assisting at information desks. Known affectionately as the “plush” buyer, she dedicated many years to curating items for the gift shop.
Mimi’s remarkable dedication is highlighted by her record as the longest-serving volunteer in the history of Torrance Memorial, amassing over 33,000 hours of service over an impressive span of 56 years. Her final shift occurred just a week before her passing, showcasing her unwavering commitment to the community she cherished.
A Celebration of Life and Legacy
As a lifelong resident of the South Bay area, Mimi found joy in the beach, sunshine, and mild weather, which complemented her vibrant personality. She is survived by her daughters, Marilyn and Jill, her grandchildren, Rebecca and Daniel, and her great-granddaughter, Karlee.
Memorial services were held at Green Hills Memorial Park on August 13, with a reception taking place at Torrance Memorial on August 14. Family, friends, fellow volunteers, and hospital staff gathered to honor Mimi’s life, share stories, and reflect on her significant contributions to the community.
The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Torrance Memorial Foundation in Mimi’s honor. Her well-lived life continues to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
As the community remembers Mimi, her legacy of compassion and service will undoubtedly remain a guiding light for future generations.
