Arlene Beth Antonovich Harrison, a cherished matriarch and an influential figure in the San Pedro community, passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 89. She was surrounded by the love of her family, leaving behind a legacy of creativity, community service, and cherished memories.
Born into a Croatian fishing family, Arlene was the daughter of Carl Antonovich, a tuna fisherman, and the granddaughter of John Antonovich, who immigrated from Korcula, Croatia, in 1907. Arlene embraced her heritage, becoming a passionate advocate for environmental issues and an active member of the San Pedro Art Association.
Legacy of Art and Community Engagement
Known affectionately as “Nene” to family and friends, Arlene was a talented artist with a profound appreciation for beauty. She enjoyed painting coastal landscapes en plein air from her ocean-view beach house, often accompanied by fellow artists. Her artistic talents extended beyond the canvas; Arlene was renowned for her culinary skills, frequently hosting dinner parties that featured traditional Croatian seafood dishes, including her famous hobotnica (octopus salad).
Her home served as a gathering place for family and friends, where laughter and storytelling filled the air during celebrations such as Fourth of July fireworks and Christmas Eve feasts. Arlene’s warmth and hospitality earned her a special place in the hearts of many, including her sons’ friends, whom she treated as her own.
Arlene was a dedicated mother to four sons—Robb, Craig, Karl, and Chris—instilling in them a love for the ocean. She taught them to swim at Cabrillo Beach, fostering a deep connection to the sea that has since been passed down to their children and grandchildren. Summer trips to Catalina Island created lasting family traditions and memories.
Family and Community Tributes
She is survived by her sons, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who continue to honor her legacy. Her family includes granddaughters Heidi, Megan, Molly, and Marina, as well as grandsons Zack and Cory, who carry forward her values of love and community.
In accordance with her wishes, a private Celebration of Life is being organized for immediate family and close friends. Arlene’s family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the San Pedro Boys and Girls Club and the San Pedro Art Association. These organizations were significant in her life and in the lives of her sons, providing them with a nurturing environment during their formative years.
As the San Pedro community reflects on her impact, Arlene Antonovich Harrison will be remembered not only for her artistic contributions but also for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication to her family and friends.
