A gunman opened fire in a Midtown Manhattan office building on July 28, 2025, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and critically injuring a fifth. The shooting occurred at 345 Park Avenue, a location that houses major corporations such as the NFL, KPMG, and Blackstone. The shooter later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to New York City officials.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed during a briefing that one of the victims was a police officer. The officer, identified as Didarul Islam, served with the New York Police Department (NYPD) and was a Bangladeshi immigrant. Mayor Adams described Islam as representing “the very best” of the police force, emphasizing his role in protecting New Yorkers from danger.
The suspect, named as Shane Tamura, 27, from Las Vegas, entered the building armed with an M4 rifle. Surveillance video showed Tamura firing indiscriminately in the lobby. The first victim was a woman who sought refuge behind a pillar as he opened fire. The shooter then proceeded to the elevator bank, where he shot a security guard who was attempting to take cover behind a desk, as well as another man in the lobby.
The incident escalated when Tamura reached the 33rd floor, the headquarters of Rudin, the building’s owners. There, he fatally shot another individual before turning the weapon on himself. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that Tamura had a documented history of mental health issues, and the investigation into his motives is ongoing.
In the aftermath, FBI agents were deployed to assist the NYPD, as confirmed by FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino. Attorney General Pam Bondi mentioned that U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton had established a command post to support the local investigation.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell also addressed the situation, revealing that a National Football League employee was among those seriously injured. The employee is currently in stable condition at a hospital.
In response to the tragedy, community leaders and city officials have expressed their condolences to the families affected. The New York City Police Department continues to provide support as investigations unfold, highlighting the need for further discussions around mental health and gun control in the wake of this incident.
