Katie Lin Ortmeyer Receives Academic Excellence Award at VSU

Katie Lin Ortmeyer, a student at Valdosta State University (VSU), has been honored with the Fall 2025 President’s Award for Academic Excellence in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. This prestigious recognition is awarded to outstanding graduating students from each of VSU’s six colleges, which include the Harley Langdale Jr. College of Business Administration, College of the Arts, James L. and Dorothy H. Dewar College of Education and Human Services, College of Science and Mathematics, and College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Recognition and Achievements

Ortmeyer will officially receive her award during VSU’s 240th Commencement ceremony, scheduled for 5 p.m. on December 13, 2025, on the Main Campus Front Lawn. She is set to graduate summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences.

Expressing her gratitude, Ortmeyer stated, “Receiving this award feels unreal, and I am profoundly appreciative of it. Looking back on my time here, God’s guidance has been so evident in every moment. My college years are even richer because of my fantastic professors, friends, and family members. This award affirms that my time here was well worth it.”

As a dedicated student, Ortmeyer has been recognized as a Georgia HOPE Scholar and has made the Dean’s List seven times, with an eighth expected after graduation. Beyond academics, she has actively contributed to her community through various roles at Northside Baptist Church, where she served as social media manager and graphic designer for the Young Adult Ministry. Her volunteer efforts included participating in mission trips to Savannah and Boston, leading Vacation Bible School activities, and guiding youth groups.

Future Aspirations

Ortmeyer’s dedication to both her studies and service has earned her several scholarships, including the 2022 Colquitt EMC Scholarship, Accepting the Challenge of Excellence (A.C.E.) Award, R. Wayne “Bubba” Alexander Memorial Scholarship, and James Eunice Legacy Scholarship. After completing her undergraduate studies, she plans to pursue a Master of Health Science in Occupational Therapy at Augusta University’s College of Allied Health Sciences.

Reflecting on her journey, Ortmeyer emphasized the importance of her experiences at VSU, stating, “My entire VSU experience, from the classroom to my work in my hometown church, has given me a strong foundation for serving my future patients with dignity, empathy, and purpose. Ultimately, my goal is to become an occupational therapist. I truly look forward to seeing where this career takes me.”

Ortmeyer’s family, including her mother Kim, father Tim, and brother Jack, have been supportive throughout her academic journey, contributing to her achievements and future aspirations.
