A celebrated classic rock band reunited for a special concert on February 2, 2024, in Bonner Springs, Kansas, marking a poignant moment for fans after several lineup changes over the past two years. Members Phil Ehart, Richard Williams, Kerry Livgren, and Dave Hope joined the current lineup of Kansas for a powerful performance, which featured encore renditions of their iconic tracks “Hold On” and “Carry On Wayward Son.”
According to Ultimate Classic Rock, Ehart and Williams, both original members of Kansas, returned to the stage alongside the band’s current lineup, highlighting their enduring legacy. Ehart, the band’s drummer, had previously stepped back from the 50th anniversary tour due to health issues, specifically a heart attack, while Williams, the original guitarist, announced he would be transitioning to a reduced role due to health concerns related to macular degeneration.
“I am not stepping down nor retiring, but I am slowing down,” Williams, 75, stated last month. He expressed confidence in his successor, guitar player Scott Bernard, who he referred to as “my hand-picked choice to help carry on the legacy of the band Kansas.” Williams co-founded Kansas in 1973 in Topeka, Kansas, with Ehart, 74, and played a vital role in creating the band’s most significant hits, including “Dust in the Wind” and “Play the Game Tonight.”
Williams has faced challenges due to his vision impairment, which he described as increasingly limiting his ability to travel for performances. He stated, “Macular degeneration has made travel increasingly difficult to the point where it impedes my ability to get to as many shows as I want. I will still be at, and perform at, as many concerts as I can.”
Livgren and Hope, who both joined the band in its early years, also participated in the concert. Livgren, who played guitars and keyboards from 1973 to 1983, along with several reunions, contributed significantly to the band’s sound. Hope served as the bassist and backup vocalist during the same period and has made guest appearances over the years.
Kansas’ current lineup includes vocalist and keyboardist Ronnie Platt, keyboardist and vocalist Tom Brislin, guitarist Zak Rizvi, violinist and guitarist Joe Deninzon, bassist and vocalist Dan McGowan, and drummer Eric Holmquist, who has been filling in for Ehart since last year.
The band is currently on tour, with performances scheduled through mid-February. Upcoming concerts will feature collaborations with notable acts such as .38 Special, Jefferson Starship, and Blue Öyster Cult. Fans can purchase tickets through platforms like SeatGeek and Vivid Seats.
The reunion concert not only celebrated the band’s rich history but also showcased the resilience of its members in the face of personal challenges. As Kansas continues to tour, their legacy remains a vital part of the classic rock landscape.
