UPDATE: A couple is redefining their lives as they embark on a transformative journey around the globe, leaving behind the conventional lifestyle for an adventurous year of rotational living. Andy Hoffman, 69, and his partner Deb, 58, began their travel adventure in January 2025 and have no plans of stopping.
The couple, experiencing a unique transitional phase between parenting and grandparenting, made the bold decision to relinquish their permanent address. They have already spent time in vibrant cities like São Paulo and Providence, immersing themselves in new cultures and environments. This lifestyle allows them to explore diverse locations while contemplating their next steps.
They are currently in the process of planning their third visit to Brazil, set to begin in early December 2025. Following Brazil, their travel itinerary includes exciting destinations in Europe, South Africa, and the Middle East next year.
Hoffman and Deb describe their travels as more than mere vacations; they engage deeply with each new place they visit. “We prefer travel as though living in a new place,” said Hoffman. Their journey is not just about exploring new cities; it’s an opportunity to savor freedom and adventure after years of raising children.
While traveling, they have learned valuable lessons about companionship and adaptability. “You have to truly enjoy your partner,” Hoffman noted. The couple, both writers and consultants, have embraced the unpredictability of life on the road, finding joy in the unknown and the thrill of exploration.
Financial considerations also play a significant role in their decision to adopt this lifestyle. Their previous home outside Boston, which they describe as too large and expensive, prompted them to consider a more flexible living arrangement. By choosing rotational living, they can explore the world while minimizing costs. In Brazil, they can rent comfortable apartments for under $1,000 a month, allowing for a more financially sustainable lifestyle.
This gap year serves not only as a means of adventure but also a chance for Hoffman and Deb to share their experiences. They have launched a blog titled Breakfast: A Love Story, where they document their journey and share insights from their travels.
As they continue their journey, they are excited about the prospect of becoming grandparents in the future. “We look forward to becoming our future grandkids’ default babysitters,” Hoffman shared, highlighting the joy and anticipation of family life ahead.
In an age where many are seeking meaning beyond material possessions, Hoffman and Deb’s story is a testament to the power of adventure and exploration. Their ongoing journey challenges conventional notions of home and invites others to consider the possibilities of living life on their own terms.
As they prepare for their next adventure, it’s clear that this couple is not just traveling; they are living a life filled with purpose, learning, and freedom. Keep an eye on their journey as they explore new horizons and redefine what it means to live fully.
