Former President Donald Trump announced on Friday his intention to grant a “full and complete pardon” to Juan Orlando Hernández, the former President of Honduras, who was sentenced in the United States for drug trafficking and weapons-related offenses. This announcement was made via Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social, just ahead of Honduras’ presidential election scheduled for Sunday.
Hernández, who served as president for two terms, was extradited to the U.S. in April 2022. According to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), court documents revealed that Hernández utilized his presidential position to facilitate the importation of more than 400 tons of cocaine into the United States. He allegedly collaborated with co-conspirators, some of whom were armed with firearms and grenade launchers. In exchange for his involvement, Hernández reportedly received millions of dollars from notorious drug-trafficking organizations.
In 2024, he received a sentence of 45 years in prison, alongside a five-year term of supervised release. Trump stated that “many people that I greatly respect” have indicated to him that Hernández was treated unjustly. He expressed his intentions to rectify this situation, particularly in light of the impending election in Honduras, where he endorsed Tito Asfura, the candidate from the National Party.
“Honduras will be on its way to great political and financial success,” Trump proclaimed, emphasizing the importance of Asfura’s victory. He further asserted that the United States would not continue to invest in Honduras if Asfura does not secure the presidency.
Asfura faces stiff competition in the election, including candidates Rixi Ramona Moncada Godoy and Salvador Nasralla. Trump’s support for Asfura is indicative of his confidence in the candidate’s potential to lead Honduras effectively, suggesting that U.S. financial assistance would be contingent upon Asfura’s success.
In his message, Trump urged voters to support Asfura and congratulated Hernández on the anticipated pardon. “VOTE FOR TITO ASFURA FOR PRESIDENT, AND CONGRATULATIONS TO JUAN ORLANDO HERNÁNDEZ ON YOUR UPCOMING PARDON,” he wrote, adding, “MAKE HONDURAS GREAT AGAIN!”
The implications of Trump’s endorsement and the potential pardon of Hernández raise significant questions about U.S. foreign policy in Central America, particularly regarding drug trafficking and political stability. As the election approaches, the outcomes may have lasting effects on U.S.-Honduran relations and the regional landscape.
