UPDATE: An overwhelming wave of community support has emerged in Bideford, North Devon, following a devastating fire that displaced around 45 residents on October 28, 2023. As evacuees struggle to return to their homes, local efforts have already raised over £4,000 to assist those affected.
The fire erupted at approximately 8:15 PM, engulfing a three-storey terrace, leaving many victims with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Authorities are still investigating the cause, with four boys and one girl aged between 13 and 15 arrested on suspicion of arson and released on police bail. A police investigation is ongoing as one man remains unaccounted for.
Local chimney sweep Tobias Kennedy-Matthews launched a GoFundMe page just days after the fire, aimed at supporting the East-the-Water Community Food Pantry. This initiative has seen remarkable success, with funds pouring in to help families facing immediate hardships.
Vanessa Sanderson, a representative from the food pantry, stated, “We opened our doors the very next morning to provide a safe space, warm drinks, and essential supplies.” The pantry has already distributed financial aid ranging from £60 to £150 per family, depending on individual circumstances.
In the wake of the tragedy, local businesses and residents have rallied to provide support. The Royal Hotel offered 11 rooms for displaced individuals, while other hotels joined efforts to secure temporary accommodations. Community members have also contributed food, clothing, and hygiene supplies to those in need.
Kennedy-Matthews, who has a history of fundraising for local charities, has temporarily allocated £2,000 from his fundraising efforts to support the pantry’s immediate needs. “Community has always been important to me,” he expressed. “The more kindness there is in the world, the better.”
Volunteers from the food pantry, established in 2021 by Jack Taylor, have been working tirelessly to provide necessary support. Taylor, who lives with a disability, is dedicated to fostering respect and empathy within the community.
As the investigation continues, the community remains vigilant and supportive. Sanderson noted, “We have worked tirelessly since Friday, arranging counseling and food drop-offs.” The pantry operates solely on donations, and all contributions are crucial for sustaining its efforts during this crisis.
