URGENT UPDATE: The United Way of Central Kansas (UWCK) has just concluded its impactful 2025 programs, marking a significant milestone in community support before the year ends. With only days left in December, UWCK wraps up its inaugural collaboration with the Larned Lions Club on the celebrated Christmas Basket program, demonstrating its commitment to the Golden Belt region.
During last week’s Larned Chamber Coffee Hour at the Carr Auction Gallery, Executive Director Charell Owings revealed key statistics and highlights from the year. Notably, the final Laundry Love event for 2025 took place in Great Bend on December 20, sponsored by the University of Kansas Health System – Great Bend campus. This initiative has successfully washed and dried over 1,500 loads of laundry since its inception, providing critical support to families in need.
“Through Laundry Love, we not only assist with laundry but also connect families to essential resources,” Owings shared. “They can reach out to the Family Crisis Center, Salvation Army, and Catholic Charities, fostering trusting relationships that encourage them to seek help.” UWCK covers five loads of laundry per family during each session, but Owings often exceeds this limit to assist those in greater need. In one instance, a family brought in 28 loads in August, showcasing the program’s reach and impact.
Laundry Love sessions are set to resume in February 2026, allowing UWCK to continue its mission of community support. Looking ahead, the organization is preparing for Reality U, an educational event at Great Bend Middle School for 8th- and 10th-graders from Larned, Kinsley, Pawnee Heights, and Otis-Bison. This program aims to provide students with realistic insights into financial responsibilities and life choices.
“We are currently seeking sponsors for Reality U,” Owings noted. “A contribution of $1,500 covers the program costs, not including meals for our volunteers. We do not profit from this event; funding primarily goes to the Pando Initiative, which facilitates the simulation.”
The urgency for community involvement is palpable as UWCK emphasizes the need for additional support to make these impactful programs happen. As the year draws to a close, the organization’s efforts highlight not only the importance of community engagement but also the tangible differences made in the lives of those they serve.
With ongoing initiatives and a commitment to building connections, UWCK continues to pave the way for a brighter future in Central Kansas. Stay tuned for more updates as they prepare for another year of service and community enhancement.
