Therapy Dogs Bring Comfort to Patients at St. Agnes Medical Center

URGENT UPDATE: Therapy dogs are transforming patient experiences at St. Agnes Medical Center in Fresno, California, as the Heavenly Hounds Program continues to provide critical comfort during challenging times. One of the standout stars, Franco the Great Dane, dons a cape as he visits the hospital, bringing joy to patients and staff alike.

According to Gina Paul, Franco’s handler and a dedicated volunteer, “When he’s in his cape, he’s Batman at work, but at home, he’s Darth Vader.” This heartwarming approach showcases the duality of Franco, who is not only a playful dog but also a therapeutic presence for those in need.

Brandon Miller, the Volunteer Services Manager, confirms the program’s impact: “If they’re having a rough day, sometimes just one of the Heavenly Hounds coming by can change their day and make it positive.” With over a decade of service since its inception in 2007, the Heavenly Hounds Program has become an essential part of the hospital’s operations.

The therapy dogs play a vital role in alleviating stress, particularly for patients facing surgery. “It’s a great stress relief for them,” Paul explains, emphasizing how the dogs help take patients’ minds off their upcoming procedures.

The program has recently faced challenges in maintaining its numbers due to the pandemic, but efforts are underway to expand and welcome more furry friends. “Before the pandemic, we had more dogs in the program,” Paul noted. “We’re actively looking for more volunteers and their dogs.”

Anyone in the hospital, from patients to staff, can request a visit from a Heavenly Hound. Miller highlighted the frequent requests from the Emergency Room, stating, “Sometimes things can get really stressful there.”

This initiative not only enhances the hospital experience but also fosters essential emotional connections. Paul encourages dog owners: “If you think your dog can work in public, please get them out. Get them socialized and get them tested.”

As the Heavenly Hounds Program continues to thrive, its presence at St. Agnes Medical Center serves as a poignant reminder of the healing power of companionship. For immediate updates, follow Ana Torrea on social media.
