UPDATE: Indie developers have officially launched their highly anticipated co-op RPG, Fellowship, in early access on November 15, 2023, after a grueling seven-year development process. This innovative game aims to captivate World of Warcraft fans by offering endless MMO-style dungeons without the typical MMO grind.
The game allows players to team up in groups of four, selecting roles like tank, healer, and damage-dealer to tackle enemy packs and bosses for loot. Players choose from a roster of MOBA-inspired heroes, eliminating the need for character leveling and questing. Instead, adventurers can jump straight into action, fostering a fresh experience for both seasoned MMO players and newcomers.
Game director and CEO Axel Lindberg expressed confidence in the unique direction of Fellowship, stating, “Our pitch—essentially building a full game around the cooperative dungeon running experience—would have been passed on in a AAA environment for being ‘too narrow.’” The team at Chief Rebel has deliberately focused on creating a game that emphasizes cooperative play without the extensive demands typical of larger studios.
Community director Hamish Bode acknowledged some skepticism among MMO enthusiasts regarding the lack of character customization but assured potential players that the game’s design is aimed at making dungeon experiences accessible for all. “We don’t necessarily have that problem,” he added, highlighting the studio’s commitment to sticking to their vision without external pressures.
Following a successful open beta launch earlier this year, the development team refined the dungeon-running experience, introducing a new ranking system that automatically adjusts difficulty, allowing players to focus on the challenge at hand. For those with limited playtime, a Quick Play option enables quick dungeon runs.
In a recent hands-on session, players experienced the game’s newest damage-dealing hero, Elarion, an agile archer capable of executing skills on the move. This mobility is crucial during intense boss battles, where dodging hazards is key to survival.
The game features leaderboards for the fastest dungeon clears, fostering a competitive spirit among players. “Of course, it’s important to handle feedback carefully,” Bode remarked, emphasizing the team’s dedication to community-driven development. The studio plans to roll out new heroes, skins, and dungeon content over the coming months, ensuring the game continually evolves based on player input.
As the excitement builds, Fellowship is now available on Steam, inviting players to dive into a world of cooperative dungeon-crawling adventures. The team encourages fans to share their experiences as they explore this groundbreaking title.
