UPDATE: The Great Bend Recreation Commission (GBRC) has just announced significant progress on two major community projects: a new outdoor basketball court at Eisenhower School and plans for a public golf course at Stone Ridge Golf Course. These developments are set to enhance recreational options in Great Bend, Kansas, and are expected to draw significant community interest.
The basketball court is nearing completion, with vibrant red and black colors already painted and court lines being added. GBRC Executive Director Chris Umphres reported that workers are taking advantage of the remaining good weather to finalize the project. “They’re putting lines down and will return to finish up on Tuesday,” Umphres confirmed during a board meeting on July 24, 2023. The court will also feature adjustable goals, player benches, and a basketball sculpture, making it a dynamic community space.
A floodlight installation by Wheatland Electric will ensure that the court can be used during evening hours, enhancing its accessibility. A grand opening celebration is in the works, although an official date has yet to be announced.
Meanwhile, the GBRC is making strides towards revitalizing the Stone Ridge Golf Course, which has been closed for nearly three years. The Commission has entered into an agreement with KemperSports, a golf course management company, to explore the potential for a high-quality, publicly accessible 18-hole golf facility. This project is contingent upon final funding approvals and donations, but officials are optimistic.
Umphres emphasized the importance of getting this project right, stating, “We want to make sure this is for the long haul and not just open it and have it fail again.” The board approved hiring a golf course architect for $35,000 to design an updated course layout, which will include features like expanded greens and possible bunkers. The architect is expected to be on-site multiple times and provide a comprehensive plan by the end of the year.
In addition to these projects, GBRC is enhancing the local dog park with new interactive equipment. Wellness Director Megan Hammeke announced that two new pieces of equipment, including a tug-of-war setup, will be added to engage dogs and their owners, promoting a vibrant community atmosphere.
With these projects in motion, Great Bend is set to transform its recreational landscape, inviting community members to engage in sports and outdoor activities. Residents and visitors alike are eagerly anticipating the opening of these facilities, which promise to enrich the local culture and foster community spirit.
Stay tuned for more updates on the grand opening of the basketball court and the forthcoming plans for the golf course. These developments are pivotal for the Great Bend community and represent a significant investment in public recreation.
