Famed Photographer Harry Benson, 96, Continues Capturing Icons

UPDATE: Legendary photographer Harry Benson is still making headlines at the remarkable age of 96. Known for capturing some of the most iconic figures in history, Benson is actively shooting and unveiling a major retrospective of his prolific career. This development comes as he reflects on his extraordinary life behind the lens, having photographed everyone from Winston Churchill to Jackie Onassis.

Benson’s career spans decades, and he is renowned for being a witness to historic moments, including the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy in 1968. “I still remember Bobby Kennedy’s last words moments before he was shot,” Benson recalled, sharing the chilling memory: “‘See you in Chicago.’” He described the scene vividly, stating, “Out of nowhere, a gun comes out… Next thing you know, Bobby’s on his back looking up at me.” This poignant recollection illustrates the profound impact of his experiences.

In addition to political figures, Benson famously captured The Beatles during their iconic pillow fight. “At first, John [Lennon] didn’t want to do it,” he shared, but soon, the lively spirit took over. His latest exhibition, managed by Steve Hartman of Contessa Gallery in Southampton, brings together the pinnacle of his work, showcasing images that shaped cultural history.

While many might expect someone of his age to slow down, Benson remains vibrant and engaged. Hartman noted, “You’d think at age 96, Harry would slow down. He’s always impeccably dressed, loves dogs, and he cusses like a sailor.” This lively spirit adds to Benson’s charm as he continues to inspire generations through his art.

Despite his fame, Benson maintains a humorous perspective about fame itself. “I look like a jerk,” he laughed when asked about photographing himself, a testament to his humble nature and enduring passion for photography.

As Benson’s retrospective opens to the public, photography enthusiasts and historians alike are eager to witness the breadth of his work. This exhibition is not just a celebration of his life; it serves as a reminder of the power of photography to capture fleeting moments and immortalize history.

What’s next? The art world will be watching closely as Benson’s retrospective unfolds, marking a significant cultural event. Fans, collectors, and aspiring photographers are encouraged to attend and celebrate a legend whose lens has captured the essence of humanity for nearly a century.

With his rich history and continued contributions to the world of photography, Harry Benson remains a vital figure, reminding us all that passion knows no age.
