URGENT UPDATE: As of New Year’s Eve, Arena Racing Company (ARC) races have been completely halted in Betfred shops following the expiration of their media rights agreement. This sudden blackout marks a significant turning point in horse racing broadcasting in the UK.
The breakdown of negotiations stems from a 30% increase in media rights payments that Betfred deemed unacceptable. With rising operational costs, Betfred has opted to sever ties with the UK’s largest racetrack operator, leaving punters without access to crucial race broadcasts.
This development is critical as it highlights the ongoing financial strain within the betting industry, fueled by escalating gaming duties and the horse racing betting levy. General Betting Duty is set to rise to 25% by April 2027, while Remote Gaming Duty will soar by 40% starting in April 2026. Such increases, announced by Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves, will drastically impact profitability for operators like Betfred.
ARC, which oversees 16 racetracks across the UK, has seen its relationship with several bookmakers deteriorate recently, primarily due to rising prices. Insider reports suggest that ARC CEO Martin Cruddace has increasingly aligned with gambling-harm campaigners, indicating a shift in priorities amidst financial challenges.
“The relationship between ARC and Betfred has been long-standing and positive,”
stated an ARC spokesperson, confirming that discussions for renewing the media rights agreement are ongoing. However, with revenues from media rights stagnating in recent years, many operators are already implementing cost-reduction measures to combat the financial pressure.
In a recent appearance on Channel 4 Racing, Cruddace revealed that ARC is exploring alternative revenue streams, including securing a gaming vendor licence in the UAE and leveraging partnerships with Britbet to take over Tote booths at their racetracks.
With negotiations still unfolding, the implications of this broadcast blackout are profound for both racing enthusiasts and the betting industry. As fans await updates, they remain concerned about the future of horse racing accessibility and the financial viability of their favorite betting platforms.
This situation is developing rapidly, and both ARC and Betfred will need to navigate these challenges carefully to restore broadcasts and strengthen their partnership. Stay tuned for further updates as talks progress.
