500,000 Young Catholics Gather in Rome for Pope Leo XIV’s Vigil

UPDATE: Over 500,000 young Catholics have flooded into Rome for a historic weekend event culminating in a vigil with Pope Leo XIV. This gathering marks a significant moment in the 2025 Holy Year, as the Pope prepares to engage with the next generation of Catholics.

The atmosphere is electric as the youth, dressed in vibrant, coordinated t-shirts, have transformed the outskirts of the city into a vibrant celebration of faith. They eagerly await the Pope’s arrival for an evening vigil, a massive outdoor slumber party, and a morning Mass on Sunday that promises to draw even more participants, with estimates suggesting attendance could reach up to 1 million.

Since arriving in Rome, these enthusiastic pilgrims have taken over the area surrounding St. Peter’s Square, participating in prayer, singing hymns, and enjoying Christian rock concerts. They have also gathered at the historic Circus Maximus, where 1,000 priests have been available to hear confessions in multiple languages.

On Saturday, young Catholics began their pilgrimage to the Tor Vergata field, walking approximately five kilometers from the nearest subway station. After passing through security checks, they set up camp with sleeping bags and umbrellas, preparing for the night ahead. Pope Leo XIV, who made history as the first American pope, is expected to arrive by helicopter to lead the vigil and answer questions from the youth.

This event has a nostalgic feel, reminiscent of the World Youth Day held in Rome in 2000, which saw an estimated 2 million attendees. At that time, St. John Paul II referred to the youth as the “sentinels of the morning” at the dawn of the third millennium.

However, the jubilant atmosphere has not been without its challenges. Tragically, the Vatican confirmed the death of Pascale Rafic, an 18-year-old Egyptian pilgrim. Pope Leo XIV expressed his condolences to her group, emphasizing the importance of community during such a significant event.

While some local residents have expressed frustration over the crowded public transport systems, many Romans have welcomed the influx of youth. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni shared a video message celebrating the “extraordinary festival of faith, joy, and hope” that the pilgrims bring to the Eternal City.

Despite the hustle and bustle, young attendees like Chloe Jobbour, a 19-year-old from Lebanon, embrace the experience wholeheartedly. She noted the challenges, such as long wait times for food, but emphasized that the discomfort is part of the journey.

As night falls, anticipation builds for the Pope’s arrival and the evening’s festivities. The energy is palpable, and many are already discussing the implications of this gathering for the Church’s future.

What happens next? All eyes will be on the vigil as Pope Leo XIV addresses the crowd, sharing a message of hope and renewal for the Catholic community worldwide. With the weekend still unfolding, this event promises to be a defining moment in the Holy Year celebrations, fostering a sense of unity and purpose among the youth of the Church.

Stay tuned for more updates as this remarkable gathering continues to develop!
