BREAKING: A 19-year-old has been charged in a tragic shooting incident on Chicago’s South Side that left a 15-year-old boy dead and a 12-year-old critically injured. The shooting occurred on Thursday, July 27, 2023, around 3:45 p.m. in the Canaryville neighborhood.
According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), the two boys were in a vacant lot in the 600-block of West 47th Street when they became involved in a confrontation with multiple suspects. At least one suspect produced a firearm and opened fire, striking the boys. The 12-year-old was shot in the chest, while the 15-year-old sustained a gunshot wound to the hip.
In a desperate attempt to escape, one of the boys managed to flee to a nearby barbershop, but collapsed shortly thereafter. Both victims were rushed to the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition. Tragically, the 15-year-old, identified as Alex Durante by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, succumbed to his injuries early Friday morning.
Police have arrested Daniel Navas Maiver, who is now facing charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder. Maiver is set to appear in court on Sunday. Authorities are still investigating whether any of those involved were students at nearby Tilden High School.
