Instagram has introduced a new feature called “Your Algorithm,” giving users the ability to influence the content they see on the platform. Launched on March 6, 2024, this feature allows individuals to specify which types of content they want to see more or less frequently in the “Reels” tab of the app.
In an exclusive interview on “Good Morning America,” Tessa Lyons, Vice President of Product at Instagram, explained how the app utilizes artificial intelligence to summarize user interests based on their activity. “If we get it wrong, you can remove those interests from your algorithm,” she stated. This new control not only enhances user experience but also increases transparency regarding how content is curated.
To access this feature, users can tap an icon resembling two hearts located at the top right corner of the Reels tab. This action opens a personal dashboard that displays their top interests derived from engagement with content. Within this dashboard, users can adjust their preferences, thereby influencing their feed in real time. Lyons emphasized, “Being able to tell us that directly… will improve their Instagram experience.”
The introduction of this feature represents a significant advancement in user engagement, according to Lance Ulanoff, Editor at Large for TechRadar. He remarked, “Algorithms are sort of at the center of these social media platforms. They’re maybe the most important part and maybe the least understood part for most consumers.” Ulanoff views Instagram’s initiative as a pivotal step toward demystifying algorithms for users.
A blog post from Instagram elaborated on the new feature, highlighting its capabilities to “see your top interests,” “tune your preferences,” and even “share your algorithm” with followers via Instagram Stories. “Instagram is leading the way in giving you more control, so your Reels feel relevant and made for you,” the post stated. It also mentioned plans to expand this capability beyond the Reels tab to areas like Explore in the near future.
This development is part of Instagram’s broader commitment to enhancing user experience and addressing feedback. “We’re still early in this journey and will keep refining and improving the experience over time,” the blog post concluded.
With this rollout, Instagram positions itself as a leader in providing users with greater control over their social media experience, setting a precedent for other platforms to follow. The combination of user input and algorithmic adjustment aims to create a more personalized and enjoyable environment for millions of users worldwide.
