Vanderbilt Athletics experienced a weekend filled with highs and lows as the university’s teams competed across multiple sports. While the football team celebrated a significant victory, the volleyball squad faced two challenging losses, highlighting a weekend of mixed results.
Football Triumphs Over Missouri
Vanderbilt football delivered an impressive performance on Saturday, defeating No. 15 Missouri 17-10. This marked a momentous occasion, as it was the first time since 2008 that ESPN’s “College Gameday” broadcasted live from Vanderbilt’s campus. The atmosphere was electric, with a large crowd eager to support their team. Notably, four of the five cast members of the show predicted a Vanderbilt win, including lifelong fan and comedian Nate Bargatze.
The Commodores showcased resilience throughout the game, overcoming adversity to secure the victory. A pivotal moment came when safety CJ Heard executed a critical strip, which led to a short touchdown run by quarterback Diego Pavia. With this win, Vanderbilt improved its season record to 7-1, with four games remaining that could have significant implications for postseason play.
Volleyball Faces Tough Challenges
In contrast to the football team’s success, Vanderbilt volleyball struggled during the weekend. The Commodores faced Georgia on Friday night, suffering a 3-1 defeat. The match was competitive, with Vanderbilt narrowly winning the second set 25-22 following a close first set that saw Georgia take the lead 25-23. Ultimately, the Bulldogs claimed victory with decisive wins in the final two sets, finishing 25-17 and 25-19.
Vanderbilt’s challenges continued on Sunday when they faced South Carolina, again going down 3-1. Similar to the Georgia match, the teams split the first two sets, each winning 25-22. Despite outpacing South Carolina in kills and assists, the Commodores could not secure a win, losing the final sets 25-21 and 25-23.
Soccer Closes Season with Victory
On a brighter note, Vanderbilt’s soccer team concluded its regular season with a significant 1-0 victory against South Carolina. This win marked the Commodores’ fourth triumph against a ranked opponent this season. The only goal of the match was scored by junior Sydney Watts in the 17th minute, assisted by Grace Freeman and Reagan Pentz. Watts’ goal brought her season total to 12, making her the leading scorer in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
With this victory, Vanderbilt secured a bye in the upcoming SEC Tournament, and the team is set to compete in the quarterfinals on November 4, 2023.
Bowling Team Finishes Strong
Vanderbilt’s bowling team also found success over the weekend, finishing third at the Sacred Heart Destination Orlando event. The No. 3 Commodores defeated No. 9 Louisiana Tech to cap off their performance. Head coach John Williamson praised his team’s improved effort compared to previous weeks, noting standout performances from players such as Avery Domaguin and Katelyn Abigania.
The bowling team will next compete at the Bulldog Classic in Fort Worth, Texas, scheduled for November 7-9, 2023.
In summary, while Vanderbilt athletics faced challenges in volleyball, the football and soccer teams achieved notable successes, contributing to an eventful weekend for the university’s sports programs.
