The Philadelphia Phillies are actively engaging in discussions regarding potential free agency signings and trade opportunities during the Major League Baseball (MLB) general managers meetings in Las Vegas. Central to these conversations is outfielder Kyle Schwarber, whose representatives from Excel Sports Management have met with the team. The Phillies are keen to re-sign Schwarber, who finished second in the National League MVP voting, but the negotiation process may take time as both parties assess the market.
The Phillies are particularly interested in avoiding a prolonged negotiation with Schwarber, who will turn 33 before the start of the upcoming season. His status as a designated hitter adds a layer of complexity, as teams evaluate their interest in him. While the Phillies value his contributions, other clubs such as the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers appear to be focusing on pitching rather than pursuing Schwarber. The Cincinnati Reds have financial flexibility with nearly $40 million coming off their payroll, but it remains unclear how much they are willing to invest in a single player. The Boston Red Sox and New York Mets could also emerge as potential suitors, particularly given the existing relationship between Schwarber and Red Sox manager Alex Cora.
As the offseason progresses, Schwarber’s camp is likely to keep all options open, while the Phillies maintain their position that he is essential to their plans. Dave Dombrowski, the Phillies’ president of baseball operations, acknowledged the delicate nature of negotiations, stating, “People understand that you’re not showing all your cards all the time… but I don’t know if we’ll be able to accomplish that. And then if not, we’re moving on to Plan B.”
Potential Changes to the Bullpen
The Phillies are also fielding interest in their left-handed relievers, which could lead to trades. With not many standout options available in free agency, teams are turning their attention to the Phillies’ bullpen, which includes José Alvarado, Matt Strahm, and Tanner Banks. Strahm, in particular, has been a valuable asset, boasting a 2.46 ERA since 2023, making him attractive to other clubs despite his recent dip in strikeout rate and fastball velocity.
The motivation behind trading one of these pitchers may stem from the Phillies’ desire to replenish their farm system with mid-level prospects while also exploring cost-saving measures. This approach could help them enhance their bullpen depth, which was notably lacking last season. The addition of Jhoan Duran has already improved their right-handed options, but the team recognizes the need for further enhancements.
As the market for right-handed hitters weakens, the Phillies may need to think creatively. They have identified potential trade targets such as Ketel Marte from the Arizona Diamondbacks and Byron Buxton from the Minnesota Twins. Both teams have downplayed the likelihood of trading these players, but any trade package would likely require top pitching prospect Andrew Painter along with several other prospects, a cost the Phillies may hesitate to meet.
Exploring Additional Roster Moves
The Phillies are not currently expected to pursue Ranger Suárez, as he is anticipated to secure a lucrative deal this winter. While they are not actively seeking rotation depth, there is an argument for acquiring another back-end starter. Recovery progress for Zack Wheeler, who underwent surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome, remains uncertain, potentially leaving the Phillies with a rotation of Cristopher Sánchez, Jesús Luzardo, Aaron Nola, Taijuan Walker, and Painter come April.
Dombrowski has indicated that while adding a starter is not the club’s highest priority, they must remain vigilant about the need for depth in that area. He noted, “You have to be careful. You always need to look for starting pitching depth. That doesn’t necessarily mean top of the market, but where does that fit in?”
As the offseason unfolds, the Phillies are navigating a complex landscape filled with opportunities for both free agency and trades. They seek to solidify their roster while maintaining a competitive edge in a challenging market. The decisions made in the coming weeks will play a crucial role in shaping the team’s future as they aim for success in the upcoming season.
