Faith Leaders Mobilize Support After Texas Floods Claim Over 100 Lives

Heavy rainfall in central Texas early on July 4, 2023, led to catastrophic flooding, resulting in a rising death toll that now exceeds 100 people. The flooding was particularly devastating for campers at Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian summer camp located along the Guadalupe River in Kerr County. Reports indicate that 27 victims were campers and counselors swept away by the floodwaters, which surged approximately 26 feet within just 45 minutes.

In the wake of this tragedy, faith leaders and congregations across the region have come together to offer support and solace. Many have issued calls for prayer, opened their doors to those in need, and began mobilizing resources for both victims and those wishing to help.

Calls for Prayer from Faith Leaders

Pope Leo XIV expressed profound condolences to the families affected by the floods during a public address following the Angelus on July 6. He specifically mentioned the “sincere condolences to all the families who have lost loved ones,” particularly those connected to the summer camp. “We pray for them,” he stated, echoing a sentiment shared by local faith leaders.

Rev. Joey Tombrella, pastor at First Baptist Church Kerrville, emphasized the importance of community support in a Facebook post. “Jesus is our hope,” he declared. He invited the community to come together for worship and prayer on Sunday, reinforcing the message that faith can provide comfort during difficult times.

Similarly, Rev. Bert Baetz of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Kerrville shared his sorrow on social media, urging his congregation to “keep praying boldly for all of our loved ones and those yet to be found.” The Episcopal News Service reported that several members of the Episcopal community were among the flood victims.

In a joint statement, Elder Jose L. Alonso and other leaders from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints expressed their solidarity, stating, “We mourn and pray for those who lost loved ones and friends.” They affirmed the uplifting spirit that emerges when communities unite in service.

Community Support and Relief Efforts

In addition to spiritual support, numerous congregations have opened their facilities to provide food, shelter, and other essential supplies to those affected. The Archdiocese of San Antonio was quick to respond, detailing available resources in a statement on social media. They highlighted the involvement of Catholic Charities, which began providing food, clothing, hygiene products, and water at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Kerrville.

The church has also opened its gymnasium to evacuees seeking shelter, stating that they were “overwhelmed” by the community’s generous response during the holiday weekend. “Thank you to all of our volunteers who sprung into action,” the church posted on July 6.

Other faith-based organizations, such as Victory Baptist Church and the First United Methodist Church, have echoed these efforts, encouraging congregants to contribute and support those impacted. Bishop Cynthia Fierro Harvey of First United Methodist Church Kerrville reminded her congregation, “Keep praying, because it matters.”

Faith leaders have also set up donation links for those wishing to assist financially. The Jewish Community of the Hill Country and the Islamic Center of San Antonio joined these efforts, providing avenues for contributions while cautioning against potential scams.

Local organizations like Catholic Charities and the Rio Texas Conference of The United Methodist Church have developed additional resources to assist those affected. They have curated a collection of worship materials and have invited community members to participate in emergency response training.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, faith leaders continue to encourage prayer and action. “No one should have to face these challenges alone,” Catholic Charities stated in a recent post. “Together, we can bring hope and healing.”
