Denny Thruston Wolfe, Jr., a respected educator and author, passed away recently, leaving behind a rich legacy in the field of education. Born in Marion, Virginia, he was the only child of Denny Thurston and Carmen Haynes Wolfe. His life’s journey was marked by a deep connection to his Appalachian roots and a commitment to teaching that spanned over three decades.
Academic Journey and Professional Achievements
Following his high school graduation, Wolfe attended Lees-McRae College, where he excelled in basketball. He later transferred to Appalachian State University, graduating in 1965 with a bachelor’s degree in English and English Education. His dedication to education continued as he worked in North Carolina schools from 1966 to 1979, including his alma mater, where he also earned a Master’s degree from Appalachian State and a Ph.D. from Duke University.
In 1974, he became the state director for the Division of Languages in North Carolina. Wolfe’s passion for education was evident in his role as a professor of English Education at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, where he served from 1979 to 2002. His career at ODU was distinguished by his contributions to the training of countless teachers, authoring over 80 publications, and leading the Tidewater Writing Project. He also served as principal investigator on various grants, significantly impacting the academic community.
Known for his even temper and sense of humor, Wolfe was highly regarded among colleagues and students alike. His openness to new ideas fostered a collaborative environment that inspired those around him. Upon retiring in 2002, Denny left behind a legacy of academic achievement and commitment to the field of education.
Personal Life and Legacy
Denny Wolfe is survived by his devoted wife of 28 years, Catherine Wolfe; his son, Cary Wolfe; his daughter, Ashley Long, and her husband, John; as well as two grandchildren, Riley Long and Owen Long. The family emphasizes that Wolfe never forgot his beginnings and often spoke of writing a book titled “Growing Up Appalachia,” a testament to his upbringing.
