Philadelphia’s community came together on August 9, 2023, for the inaugural Big Black Ball, hosted by the Achievers Brunch Association at the Free Library of Philadelphia. The themed event, titled “Sophisticated Black Hollywood,” aimed to support college-bound young Black men by fostering a network of mentorship and resources.
A Mission to Empower Young Scholars
Founded in 2014 by Mister Mann Frisby, the Achievers Brunch Association has expanded its mission from supporting high school seniors to accompanying them through their college journeys. The organization now provides essential tools such as internships, career programming, and financial assistance, all while fostering connections among young Black scholars.
Co-director Randy Shine, who joined the organization in 2019, emphasized the importance of addressing the challenges faced by young Black men in Philadelphia. “It really started off as a grassroots effort,” Shine stated, noting how the initiative has evolved to meet community needs. “We know that there’s a need to recognize and support young Black men who are going to college and who are in college in the Philadelphia region.”
Highlighting Community Support
The event served as an opportunity to showcase the strength of the community while also raising funds to support students’ educational pursuits. Shine highlighted that the Big Black Ball aimed to create an atmosphere akin to the Met Gala, attracting various Philadelphia influencers, including one who traveled from California to lend support.
The gathering was not just for fundraising; it was also about visibility. “We wanted to show them that people are coming out to support them,” Shine explained, referring to the program’s scholars in attendance. “We wanted the people who came out to support us to see the young men who are in the organization.”
Shine confirmed that the event successfully met its fundraising objectives, indicating a growing interest from other organizations and city leaders as they look toward future events. The Achievers Brunch Association continues to accept donations to further its mission, with Shine expressing hope for increased community involvement. “It only takes one person or two people to get something started and then the rest will follow if you’re doing good work,” he said.
As the Big Black Ball concludes, supporters are encouraged to visit the Achievers Brunch Association’s website for donation opportunities, ensuring that the momentum for empowering young Black scholars continues. The event stands as a testament to community collaboration and the ongoing commitment to uplifting the next generation.
