Janet L. Withers, a beloved educator and community member from Blandon, Pennsylvania, passed away on December 13, 2025. Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Mabel (James) and Russell Beard. Withers is remembered for her dedication to education and her unwavering commitment to her family and community.
In 1971, Janet married Kenneth Withers, and together they raised two daughters in her childhood home. Over their more than 54 years of marriage, the couple enjoyed numerous travels across the United States and internationally, creating cherished memories along the way.
A Lifelong Commitment to Education
Janet graduated from Fleetwood Area High School in 1964 and maintained a strong connection with her alma mater. She actively participated in organizing reunions for the Class of ’64 and enjoyed reconnecting with her fellow classmates known as the “Tiger Lilies.”
After her studies at Kutztown University, Janet dedicated nearly four decades to teaching in the Reading School District. She spent the latter half of her career as a librarian at Riverside Elementary, where she inspired countless young minds. Janet’s passion for education extended beyond the classroom; she also served many years as Superintendent of Sunday School and taught various programs at St. Paul’s U.C.C. in Fleetwood.
Following her retirement, Janet continued to nurture her love for reading and education. She joined a book club at the Muhlenberg Community Library and delighted in storytelling sessions for young readers, sharing her enthusiasm for literature and learning.
Legacy and Celebration of Life
Janet is survived by her husband, Kenneth E. Withers, and their daughters, Karyn E. Morrison (wife of Shawn Morrison) and Mariellen L. Withers. She also leaves behind her cherished tuxedo cat, Skittles, along with several grandcats and a dog named Mace, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Janet’s infectious laughter and warm hugs will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew her.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Katherine Kershaw and Patricia Loose.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Janet’s memory be made to the public library system or an animal shelter of choice.
A Celebration of Janet’s Life is scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s U.C.C., located at 5 W. Arch St., Fleetwood, PA.
