Community members in Ocean Beach, California, are mourning the loss of local fisherman and popular YouTuber Mikey Rijavec, whose body was discovered in Mexican waters after he issued a distress call. Rijavec, known for his YouTube channel SD Fish and Sips, set off from the coast of Baja California, Mexico, on November 11, 2023, for what was meant to be a routine fishing trip.
At approximately 14:30 local time, Rijavec made a mayday call reporting engine trouble about eight miles from shore. Shortly thereafter, the call went silent, leading to urgent search efforts. Authorities later located his 14-foot skiff drifting five miles from land, but the outboard motor was missing.
Search Efforts Mobilized Across Borders
The disappearance of Rijavec prompted a significant response from both the Mexican Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard, as well as numerous private vessels from both countries. His brother, Gregory Rijavec, initiated a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for additional fuel and aircraft needed for the search operation. Within days, the campaign garnered over $40,000, reflecting the community’s concern and commitment to finding Mikey.
Messages of support and donations flowed in from family, friends, and fans, showcasing the impact Rijavec had within his community and beyond. Tragically, on November 17, 2023, searchers confirmed their worst fears when Rijavec’s body was found near San Cristóbal in Baja California Sur.

Phil Friedman, a fellow angler and podcaster, shared the heartbreaking news after speaking with Rijavec’s father.
