Cardi B has unveiled her latest single, “Imaginary Playerz,” just over a month before the release of her highly anticipated sophomore album, Am I the Drama?. The track debuted on streaming platforms on August 15, 2023, following her earlier release, “Outside.”
“Imaginary Playerz” draws inspiration from Jay-Z’s classic track “Imaginary Players,” which appeared on his 1997 album, In My Lifetime, Vol. 1. Cardi shared that she received the legendary rapper’s approval for her new single, stating, “If he didn’t approve it, I probably wouldn’t even feel a certain type of way neither.” She expressed her relief during an X Spaces event, adding, “But I’m glad that I came hard and he loved it.”
The announcement of the single came earlier in the week, when Cardi showcased the luxurious cover art on her Instagram account. The image features her in a striking white fur coat, seated on the hood of a matching Rolls-Royce. In her post, she teased fans with the caption, “Just a lil taste of the drama. IMAGINARY PLAYERZ THIS FRIDAY.”
As anticipation builds for her upcoming album, fans are curious whether Cardi will release another single before the album drops. “Outside” previously made its mark by debuting at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reaching the top of both the Rhythmic Airplay and Rap Airplay charts.
Cardi’s sophomore LP will feature a total of 23 tracks, including previously released hits “Up” and “WAP.” The Grammy-winning artist has defended her choice to keep these older songs on the album, stating on X, “This will be the last and only time I’m gonna address this. WAP and Up are two of my biggest songs, my fans have been asking me to put them on an album, and people search for them on IOP all the time… they deserve a home.”
With the release of “Imaginary Playerz,” Cardi B continues to captivate her audience and solidify her place in contemporary music. As fans eagerly await Am I the Drama?, the momentum surrounding her music and influence in the industry shows no signs of slowing down. Listen to the new single below.
