During his visit, Mamdani expressed his fondness for Coca, a calico cat that resides in the bodega. “Coca is cute,” he remarked. “Coca wants to play. Coca wants to live in a city she can afford.” While he did not provide specific policy proposals regarding affordable housing for feline residents, his lighthearted approach resonated with viewers.
Mamdani also showcased his lively personality by dancing a few steps of the Dominican dance, Bachata, during the episode. He shared his fondness for bodega cats and his favorite food, stating, “I also love an egg and cheese on a roll with jalapeños.” The episode can be viewed on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram at the handle @shopcats.
“Shop Cats” has gained significant traction online, boasting over 793,400 followers on TikTok and approximately 228,000 followers on Instagram. Additionally, a dedicated Instagram account, Cats4Zohran, has garnered around 11,000 followers, promoting the message, “Cats catvassing for Zohran! A livable NYC = safer affordable homes + more treats!” In contrast, a related Dogs4Zohran account has attracted only 708 followers.
Mamdani is currently leading in the polls for the three-way mayoral race, which includes former New York governor Andrew M. Cuomo as an independent candidate and Republican activist Curtis Sliwa.
