The Houston Food Bank is stepping up to provide urgent assistance as the government shutdown impacts many families. A special food distribution event will take place at NRG Stadium on Saturday, offering relief to those affected by interruptions in their SNAP benefits and salaries. This initiative is crucial for the community, particularly for over 50,000 federal employees who missed their first paycheck on October 24, 2023.
According to the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), there will be delays or cancellations of SNAP benefits starting November 1. This situation will likely affect thousands within the Houston Food Bank’s 18-county service area. To alleviate the challenges faced by Houstonians, the food bank encourages families to register online prior to attending the event at NRG Stadium.
Alongside the main distribution at NRG Stadium, the Houston Food Bank is organizing additional distribution events throughout southeast Texas. Families can find a comprehensive list of these events, including dates, times, and locations, on the Houston Food Bank’s official website.
In addition to the food distributions, the Houston Food Bank urges community members to utilize the 2-1-1 service to identify their nearest partner sites for food assistance. This outreach aims to ensure that those in need receive support during these difficult times.
The Houston Food Bank continues to adapt its services in response to the evolving needs of the community, highlighting its commitment to alleviating food insecurity amid challenging circumstances.
