UPDATE: Grand Rapids Christian’s girls volleyball team has triumphed over No. 6 Tecumseh in a nail-biting 3-2 victory during the Division 2 state quarterfinals held at Gull Lake High School on July 15, 2025. The Eagles clinched the match with a decisive 15-9 win in the fifth set, showcasing their resilience and battle-tested experience.
The Eagles, ranked third, have proven their mettle after a tough loss to Hudsonville earlier this season. That September 9 match served as a catalyst for their growth, propelling them to crucial wins against tough opponents like Forest Hills Northern and East Grand Rapids. Coach Amy Huisken emphasized the importance of these challenges, stating, “Those are big D1 teams that we know we won’t see in the postseason, but they make us better.”
In a match filled with momentum swings, Christian initially took the lead with a 25-16 win in the first set. However, Tecumseh quickly countered, securing the second set 25-20. The Eagles regained control with another 25-20 victory in the third set, largely thanks to senior Maddie Landheer‘s impressive performance.
The fourth set saw Tecumseh surge ahead with an 8-1 run, ultimately winning 25-23 and forcing a decisive fifth set. In this pivotal moment, Christian jumped to a 5-1 lead, with all-state junior outside hitter Grace Goodyke delivering key kills. Sophomore middle hitter Mya McKinnon sealed the victory with her third kill of the set.
Huisken highlighted the importance of their experience in five-set matches, stating, “We’ve seen it a lot in our season, so we’re pretty battle-tested in that scenario.” The Eagles’ ability to remain composed under pressure was evident, showcasing their readiness for high-stakes situations.
Tecumseh’s head coach Morgan Skelton acknowledged the challenges her team faced, particularly in the deciding set. “Nerves definitely played a factor,” she noted, underscoring the need for her players to minimize mistakes against a formidable opponent like Christian.
Despite the loss, Tecumseh’s standout players, including senior Emma Eldred with 17 kills and freshman Riley Harrah with 10 kills, showed promise. Skelton praised Harrah’s performance, stating, “She developed a lot… that’s very, very hard to do.”
The Eagles (27-8) now advance to face second-ranked and defending Division 2 state champion Detroit Country Day (22-8) in the state semifinals on Friday at noon at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. This marks Christian’s second trip to the final four in three years, and the team is energized by the experience of returning players.
Huisken added, “They want to be back there… I think it really helps that the team can see their passion and their want for it.” As they prepare for the semifinal matchup, all eyes will be on Grand Rapids Christian to see if they can continue their thrilling postseason run.
This victory not only demonstrates the Eagles’ determination but also sets the stage for an exciting next round, captivating fans and drawing attention across the state.
