Carroll Stands Firm Behind Smith After Raiders’ Defeat to Cowboys

In a challenging season for the Las Vegas Raiders, head coach Pete Carroll expressed unwavering support for quarterback Geno Smith following the team’s 33-16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on November 27, 2023. This defeat marked the Raiders’ fourth consecutive loss, raising further questions about the team’s performance and direction.

Carroll emphasized his belief in Smith, stating, “I continue to really believe in him. I have no hesitation in telling you that. He’s an incredible player, and he’s busting his tail, and he’s working really hard at it.” Despite the high-pressure situation, Carroll noted that Smith has not shied away from his responsibilities. The quarterback faced a tough game, completing 27 of 42 passes for 238 yards, which included a touchdown and a passer rating of 77.3. Unfortunately, he also recorded his thirteenth interception of the season.

The game showcased Smith’s struggles as he was sacked four times and pressured on 16 of his 49 dropbacks. The Raiders’ offensive strategy reflected Carroll’s confidence in Smith, with a designed pass on 84% of their plays, the highest percentage since 2012. In stark contrast, the team managed only 12 rushing attempts for a mere 27 yards. Carroll acknowledged a critical play where Smith’s decision-making could have been better, remarking, “There was a chance there for a 10-yard play, probably… But there was a better decision to make than that on that play.”

Smith’s performance has drawn attention, as he currently leads the league in interceptions, a troubling statistic for the Raiders, especially considering they have not selected a quarterback in the first round since drafting JaMarcus Russell first overall in 2007. Following the game, Smith took responsibility for the team’s difficulties, stating, “For me, again, I just gotta play better. I keep saying this; if something looks right out there, blame it on me.”

As the Raiders struggle with a record of 2-8, Carroll’s support for Smith may soon be tested. If the team’s issues persist in the final seven games of the regular season, the veteran head coach might face difficult decisions regarding the quarterback position. On October 29, the Raiders designated rookie Aidan O’Connell to return from the injured reserve list, raising questions about whether he will be activated or kept on IR for the rest of the season. Carroll mentioned the team’s efforts to accelerate O’Connell’s development, stating, “He’s had quite a bit of practice opportunity to get going, so he’s done all right with it, too.”

Looking ahead, the Raiders are projected to have a high pick in the upcoming NFL draft, with estimates indicating they could secure the fourth overall selection. According to ESPN’s Football Power Index, there is an 8.9% chance of landing the top pick and a 62.5% chance of drafting within the top five. This positioning may allow the organization to select one of the top quarterback prospects, which could redefine their future at the position.

For now, Carroll remains committed to Smith as the starting quarterback, navigating a tumultuous season with an eye on improvement and potential changes ahead. As the challenges mount, the coach’s steadfast support will be crucial as the Raiders seek to turn their fortunes around in the coming weeks.
