UPDATE: Funeral services are set for Tuesday, November 7, 2023, honoring San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy Andrew Nunez, who was tragically shot and killed last month. The procession will commence at 8:30 a.m. before the funeral service starts at 11:00 a.m. at the Toyota Arena in Ontario. While the funeral is private, the community is encouraged to pay their respects along the procession route, including North Haven Avenue and Concours Street.
Deputy Nunez, aged 35 and a six-year veteran of the sheriff’s department, was responding to a domestic dispute on October 27 when the suspect, Angelo Jose Saldivar, allegedly opened fire. Saldivar, now 47, was involved in a violent confrontation with his ex-wife outside a condominium complex in Rancho Cucamonga. Following the shooting, he fled on a motorcycle, leading authorities on a high-speed chase along the 210 Freeway. The pursuit was dramatically ended by an off-duty narcotics deputy who executed a maneuver that forced Saldivar to crash.
Authorities report that several victims, including neighbors who called 911 for help, were caught in the crossfire.
“Most of those other victims were actually reporting parties that were calling in to 911, and in some of those instances, you can actually hear in the 911 call some of the shots that were fired,”
stated Sheriff Shannon Dicus during a recent media briefing.
As the community mourns, Deputy Nunez is survived by his wife, their two-year-old daughter, and a second child on the way. Sheriff Dicus emphasized the importance of community involvement in honoring Nunez, saying,
“We know the public wants to be involved, and we are going to try and make all those considerations.”
Saldivar faces serious charges, including attempted kidnapping and false imprisonment of his ex-wife, alongside four counts of assault with a deadly weapon. He pleaded not guilty to these charges on November 5.
As the funeral approaches, the outpouring of support from the community underscores the profound impact Deputy Nunez had during his life in service. Residents are urged to gather along the procession route, showing solidarity and respect for a fallen hero.
