Trey Yesavage Strikes Out 9, Sets Jays Record in MLB Debut

UPDATE: In a stunning MLB debut, Trey Yesavage struck out nine batters, setting a new record for the Toronto Blue Jays on September 25, 2023. The Blue Jays triumphed over the Tampa Bay Rays with a nail-biting 2-1 victory in extra innings, further solidifying their lead in the AL East.

Yesavage, a 22-year-old right-hander drafted 20th overall last year, delivered an impressive performance, allowing just one run on three hits and two walks over five innings. He threw 49 of 69 pitches for strikes, averaging 94.6 mph with his fastballs. Notably, six of his strikeouts came from his devastating splitter, showcasing his dominance on the mound.

In a decisive moment, George Springer hit a tiebreaking single in the 11th inning off pitcher Kevin Kelly, propelling Toronto to improve their record to 10-4 in extra-inning games this season. This victory marks the Blue Jays’ fifth consecutive win, extending their lead to a comfortable five games in the division.

Yesavage’s debut was a family affair, with loved ones from Boyertown, Pennsylvania, and former teammates cheering him on from the stands. After a shaky start, where he surrendered a leadoff single and an RBI double, Yesavage settled in, retiring 15 of the next 18 batters and striking out the side in the fourth inning. The emotional impact was palpable, especially for his father, who fought back tears during the historic performance.

“It was a surreal experience,” Yesavage said after the game. “I just tried to focus on each pitch and help my team win.”

Meanwhile, the Rays struggled offensively, tallying a staggering 18 strikeouts, their highest number since August 28, 2019. The team’s recent performance has been alarming, with this loss marking their eighth defeat in ten games, leaving them 8.5 games behind for the last AL wild card spot.

The game drew an attendance of 8,972 at the 10,046-capacity Steinbrenner Field, highlighting ongoing struggles to fill the stands, with this being their 17th non-sellout in 75 games at their temporary venue.

Looking ahead, both teams will prepare for the next matchup as the Blue Jays aim to continue their winning streak and the Rays search for answers to their recent woes. Fans are eager to see if Yesavage can build on this remarkable start in his upcoming appearances.
