A disturbing incident unfolded in Leeds on November 8, 2023, when three masked teenagers engaged in a violent confrontation, brandishing 24-inch machetes in broad daylight. The shocking altercation was captured on video by a motorist, who witnessed the chaotic scene around 14:30 local time on Kirkstall Hill.
The footage reveals one assailant in black repeatedly swinging his machete at another teen, escalating into a frenzied brawl involving all three individuals. As they circled each other, two of the teens darted towards an electric bike abandoned on the street. Moments later, one of them charged back at another, delivering aggressive blows with the weapon. The chaotic skirmish lasted approximately ten minutes, leaving one participant seen kneeling on the ground, reportedly injured.
Nigel Himsworth, a 52-year-old father from South Yorkshire, was returning home from a soccer match with his son when he encountered the violent scene. “We were coming down the slip road and there were cars stopped in front of us,” he recounted. “I rolled down my window and popped my head out to see the lads going at each other with machetes.”
Himsworth described the experience as deeply unsettling, stating, “It made me feel sick to the bone, it was brutal. It wasn’t very nice to see, and it just goes to show how lawless the country is becoming.” He expressed concern over the size of the weapons, noting, “I’ve never seen a weapon so big in my life; they were huge.” Fortunately, he observed that no one appeared to suffer serious injuries during the encounter.
The West Yorkshire Police Department reported that they arrived on the scene after the assailants had fled on electric bikes. One 18-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with threatening a person with a blade in a public space. The individual, who sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries during the fight, is expected to appear in court at a later date.
This incident raises significant concerns about youth violence and the prevalence of weapons in public spaces. Community members are left shaken by the events, prompting discussions about safety and the need for greater intervention to prevent such occurrences in the future. The police have not yet provided additional comments regarding the ongoing investigation.
