Construction is set to begin on the second phase of the Terminal 1 upgrade at San Diego International Airport (SAN). The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority announced that Phase 1B of the New T1 development will commence on September 8, 2023, with significant changes affecting both vehicle and pedestrian access.
As part of the preparations for this phase, the arrivals roadway connecting Terminals 1 and 2 will close to ensure safety for construction crews. Travelers needing to navigate between the two terminals will have to rely on designated detour routes provided by the airport authority. To assist drivers, detailed maps and an animated detour video are available on the airport’s website.
For those traveling on foot, the outdoor walkway between the terminals will remain accessible until September 22, 2023. After this date, pedestrians will need to utilize the free Terminal Loop Shuttle, which operates daily from 06:00 to 23:00. Shuttle pickup points are clearly marked on the airport’s site, ensuring that travelers can easily find their way.
A significant milestone will occur on the night of September 22, when the existing Terminal 1 will permanently close following the departure of its last flights. The demolition of the terminal will pave the way for Phase 1B construction, which aims to enhance the airport’s capacity and passenger experience. This phase will introduce 11 additional gates, modernized infrastructure, and improved amenities, including customer lounges.
The upgrade is part of a broader effort to accommodate the growing number of passengers at the airport and enhance overall travel experiences. With these developments, San Diego International Airport is taking essential steps towards a modernized terminal that aligns with current and future demands.
