OpenAI has announced an initiative to provide its ChatGPT Enterprise model to the entire federal workforce at a nominal fee of just $1 per year. This partnership, established with the US General Services Administration (GSA), aims to enhance the adoption of artificial intelligence technologies among government employees.
The GSA, which serves as the government’s centralized procurement division, revealed earlier this week that it has expanded its list of approved AI companies to include Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI. As part of this effort, OpenAI is offering federal employees access to the enterprise version of ChatGPT, which includes a 60-day free trial for unlimited use of advanced features.
Supporting Government Employees with AI
To facilitate the use of AI technologies, OpenAI has established a dedicated community for government users. This initiative is designed to help federal employees gain confidence in utilizing AI tools. The company is also providing custom training platforms and guided learning resources to assist employees in exploring the capabilities of the technology.
“This effort delivers on a core pillar of the Trump Administration’s AI Action Plan by making powerful AI tools available across the federal government,” OpenAI stated. The organization emphasized that the goal is to allow workers to focus less on administrative tasks and more on serving the American public.
OpenAI has assured users that the ChatGPT Enterprise model does not utilize business data— including inputs or outputs— to train or improve its models. This commitment to data security applies to all federal use of the platform. The GSA has officially issued an Authority to Use (ATU) for ChatGPT Enterprise, reinforcing its dedication to rigorous security and compliance standards.
Growing Usage and Impact of ChatGPT
Since the beginning of 2024, ChatGPT has gained significant traction within government agencies. More than 90,000 users across over 3,500 federal, state, and local government entities have exchanged upwards of 18 million messages using the platform to support their daily work, according to information published on OpenAI’s website.
This initiative represents a significant step in enhancing the efficiency and productivity of the federal workforce by leveraging advanced AI technology. As OpenAI continues to work with the GSA and other agencies, it aims to further integrate AI solutions into public service, ultimately benefiting both employees and the communities they serve.
