Duke Nicholson Steps into Spotlight with New Film The Deputy

Duke Nicholson, grandson of Hollywood legend Jack Nicholson, is taking a significant step into the limelight with his first leading role in the upcoming film The Deputy. Directed by his longtime friend Matt Sukkar, the movie is a gritty crime thriller that showcases Nicholson’s talent as both an actor and aspiring director.

For nearly a decade, the 26-year-old has navigated the film industry, appearing in various projects while cultivating a deep appreciation for classic cinema. His previous roles include a memorable performance as a creepy carny in Jordan Peele’s film Us and being featured on the cover of Lana Del Rey’s acclaimed album Norman Fucking Rockwell!.

About The Deputy

Based on Victor Gischler‘s novel and penned by Carlo Bernard, co-creator of Narcos and Griselda, The Deputy follows the story of Toby Sawyer, played by Nicholson, a hapless part-time lawman who is tasked with guarding a corpse that mysteriously vanishes. This leads to a chaotic one-night adventure filled with small-town corruption.

The film features a notable ensemble cast, including William H. Macy, Tiffany Haddish, Stephen Dorff, and Julia Fox, with production led by Andrew Stevens, Hicham Benkirane, and Sukkar. Executive producers include Bernard, Gischler, and Mark Canton, known for 300 and Den of Thieves.

International sales for The Deputy were initiated by Highland Film Group at the Cannes Film Festival, securing deals across Europe, Australia, and Canada. The film is set to debut at festivals in 2026.

Finding His Own Voice

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Nicholson discussed his journey into acting and the influence of his grandfather. While he grew up surrounded by the film industry, he emphasized that it was not a predetermined path. “My interest in film was definitely there, but I didn’t really think about it as a career path until I was probably 15 or 16,” he noted. Initially aspiring to direct, Nicholson found himself acting in projects during high school, which sparked his passion for performance.

Nicholson’s collaboration with Sukkar began when they met at the Sundance Film Festival, where both were supporting friends’ films. Their friendship blossomed into a creative partnership, culminating in The Deputy. “What appealed to me was the grittiness of it,” he said, reflecting on the script. He described the film’s chaotic, character-driven narrative as reminiscent of classic Scorsese films.

Although he is often asked about his grandfather’s influence, Nicholson appreciates the emphasis Jack has placed on creating one’s own material. This advice resonates with him as he seeks to carve out his own identity in the industry. “He’s always been more than an actor; he’s a writer and director, too,” Nicholson explained.

In addition to acting, Nicholson is currently focused on writing and directing his own projects, with aspirations to act in films he directs. “John Cassavetes is my biggest hero,” he stated, highlighting his desire to follow in the footsteps of filmmakers who create authentic and compelling narratives.

Nicholson’s multifaceted interests extend beyond acting and directing. Although he occasionally surfs, he admits that modeling is not his primary passion. Instead, he spends his time watching films, attending screenings at local theaters in Los Angeles, and enjoying sports with his girlfriend.

As he prepares for the release of The Deputy, Duke Nicholson’s journey in the film industry serves as a testament to his dedication and ambition, as he continues to build his own legacy in Hollywood.
