Wynn Resorts Eyes Georgia Casino Market; Billions at Stake

UPDATE: Major gaming companies are positioning themselves for a potential breakthrough in Georgia’s long-standing casino gambling ban. Wynn Resorts and Boyd Gaming expressed their readiness to invest heavily in the state during a recent House study committee hearing.

Officials have confirmed that if Georgia lawmakers and voters revise the state constitution, these gaming giants could bring in billions. Christopher Gordon, a top executive at Wynn Resorts, emphasized the opportunity to create a destination casino resort similar to their $2.6 billion Encore Boston Harbor in Massachusetts, which has generated over $1 billion in gaming taxes since opening in 2019.

The potential for job creation and significant tax revenue has caught the attention of state lawmakers, who are currently reviewing the economic implications of legalizing casino and sports betting. Gordon noted, “A similar complex in Georgia could produce thousands of jobs and bring in big tax money.”

As the discussions progress, Boyd Gaming’s spokesman, Ryan Soultz, hinted at the profitability Georgia could offer if voters support the legalization of casinos. The committee meeting marks the second session since its establishment this year to evaluate the economic benefits and community concerns regarding new gambling laws.

Midtown, Savannah, and North Georgia have emerged as prime locations for potential casino developments, according to property adviser Rick Lackey. He suggested sites near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and in Downtown Atlanta as ideal candidates for these lucrative projects.

Despite the excitement from the gaming industry, significant legal hurdles remain. Previous attempts to expand gambling, including efforts in 2018 and this year, failed to reach a legislative vote. Rep. Ron Stephens stated that the focus will shift to sports betting in the next legislative session, which could appear on the ballot in 2026 if it gains super-majority approval.

Proponents of legalized gambling argue that it could help Georgia compete with neighboring states and secure new funding for vital programs like the HOPE Scholarship, which faces financial challenges in the coming years. Advocates cite North Carolina’s experience, where regulated sports betting outperformed expectations, suggesting Georgia could see similar financial benefits while curbing illegal offshore betting.

As the future of casino gaming in Georgia hangs in the balance, industry leaders are poised to invest billions, increasing pressure on lawmakers to reconsider the current ban. With the stakes so high, all eyes will be on the upcoming legislative sessions as discussions continue to develop.

Stay tuned for more updates on this rapidly evolving situation that could reshape Georgia’s economic landscape.
