UPDATE: A striking new addition has just arrived at the Michigan Military Technical & Historical Society Museum in Eastpointe. A large M8 Armored Gun System tank now proudly sits on the museum’s front lawn, capturing the attention of residents and military enthusiasts alike.
The M8 tank, developed during the 1980s, was originally intended to replace the M551 Sheridan. This model has historical significance, closely linked to the Stingray light tank, a prototype created by Cadillac Gage in nearby Warren. The museum’s collection features extensive archival information on the Stingray project, making the M8 a fitting addition to its mission of preserving military history.
Museum operators are thrilled with this new acquisition, which was made possible through a successful crowdfunding campaign. These funds were utilized for transporting the tank and constructing a sturdy concrete pad on which it now rests. The museum, which spans 11,000 square feet, showcases a wide range of actual military equipment, weapons, uniforms, and other artifacts that underline Michigan’s vital role in the defense of democracy.
As for the community, the museum is welcoming visitors to view the tank at any time. An official celebration event is in the works, but in the meantime, residents are encouraged to come see this long-desired exhibit. The museum operates entirely on volunteer efforts, highlighting their dedication to honoring military heritage.
This development not only enhances the museum’s collection but also fosters community engagement and appreciation for military history. Stay tuned for more updates on the upcoming official event and further exhibitions at the Michigan Military Technical & Historical Society Museum.
