Urgent Rescue: 11 Dogs, 2 Cats Saved from Hoarding in Vista

UPDATE: In a dramatic rescue operation, 11 dogs and 2 cats have been saved from a hoarding situation in an abandoned apartment in Vista, California. The San Diego Humane Society confirmed the rescue, which unfolded over four days, beginning on October 1, 2023, after a concerned landlord reported the tenant missing.

Officers from the Humane Society, supported by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, discovered the animals living in what officials described as “hoarding-like conditions.” Inside the two-bedroom unit, the dogs were found navigating through makeshift tunnels created within piles of trash and debris that filled the space from floor to ceiling. Many of the frightened animals were hiding under beds and furniture, complicating the rescue efforts.

The rescued dogs, including small breeds like Pomeranians and Chihuahuas, were in poor health, suffering from fleas, skin ailments, and overgrown nails. They were immediately transported to the Humane Society’s Oceanside Campus, where they are receiving urgent medical care and placed under Emergency Boarding.

“This is a heartbreaking case, but we are grateful these animals are finally safe,” stated Jace Huggins, Chief of Humane Law Enforcement at the San Diego Humane Society. “Sadly, situations like this occur when pet owners become overwhelmed or face personal challenges. If you or someone you know is struggling to care for pets, please reach out for help before it escalates.”

As of now, the Humane Society is caring for a staggering 792 dogs, highlighting an urgent need for public support. Officials are actively investigating the situation, utilizing traps and cameras to ensure no animals are left behind in the apartment.

The organization is also urging community involvement through adoption, fostering, and donations. To address the increasing number of animals in need, the San Diego Humane Society is offering a limited-time adoption fee of just $50 for adult dogs and cats as part of the BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters initiative. This offer is valid through October 15, 2023, with animals available at campuses in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside, and San Diego from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, or online.

The Humane Society continues to work closely with law enforcement to ensure all animals at the property are safe and receiving the care they need. This significant rescue illustrates the pressing need for community awareness and support in preventing such situations.

Residents are encouraged to share this news to raise awareness and help find homes for these deserving animals. Every share counts in spreading the word and ensuring a brighter future for these pets in need.
