Thomas Nolan Sworn In as Deputy Chief of Montgomery County Detectives

UPDATE: In a significant leadership shift, Thomas Nolan was sworn in as the new Deputy Chief of the Montgomery County Detective Bureau on September 18, 2025. The ceremony took place in a packed courtroom, attended by key figures including Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele and Court of Common Pleas Judge Risa Vetri Ferman.

Deputy Chief Nolan, who previously served as the Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police in Upper Merion Township, will now work alongside Chief Detective Mark Bernstiel to oversee a team of 62 sworn and unsworn members within the Detective Bureau. This appointment marks a new chapter for Nolan, who has dedicated 39 years to law enforcement, including a decade as Chief since June 2012.

Nolan’s extensive background includes leadership of the Montgomery County Central SWAT since 2001, showcasing his deep-rooted commitment to community safety. Since joining the Detective Bureau on August 12, 2024, he has already made significant strides, notably by establishing the new Threat Assessment Management Unit (TAMU). This unit is critical for addressing threats against public officials, schools, and places of worship.

“Tom Nolan is a highly respected law enforcement professional who brings extensive expertise to the Deputy Chief position,” said DA Steele. “Chief Bernstiel and I are thrilled to elevate Tom to this leadership role within the Montgomery County Detective Bureau.”

The establishment of TAMU under Nolan’s leadership is particularly timely, as it is tasked with investigating threats that endanger community safety and individual lives across the county. This proactive measure underscores the importance of addressing security concerns in today’s environment.

Nolan’s appointment is a pivotal moment for law enforcement in Montgomery County, signaling a strong commitment to community engagement and safety. As he steps into this new role, all eyes will be on how his leadership will shape the future of the Detective Bureau and enhance public safety efforts throughout the region.

As the community reacts to this important announcement, residents can expect ongoing updates about initiatives and developments spearheaded by the new Deputy Chief. With Nolan’s proven track record and dedication, Montgomery County is poised for a stronger focus on safety and crime prevention.
