BREAKING: The Tampa Bay Rays have just placed All-Star first baseman Jonathan Aranda on the 10-day injured list due to a fractured left wrist. This critical development comes after Aranda suffered the injury during a collision with New York Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton on July 13, 2023.
Aranda, who has emerged as a key player this season, expressed optimism about his recovery, stating that he did not feel the injury was “catastrophic.” However, Rays officials confirm he will be unable to use his wrist for approximately three weeks. As part of his recovery, Aranda’s wrist is currently immobilized in an air cast, and he will undergo further imaging to reassess his condition at the three-week mark.
“Let’s see how the bone heals,” said Rays manager Kevin Cash before Friday night’s series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers. “I think he has re-imaging in about three weeks, but we will continue to remain optimistic.”
The injury occurred in the fifth inning when Stanton hit a soft grounder towards third baseman Junior Caminero. Aranda reached for Caminero’s wide throw, which sailed into him, causing his wrist to collide with Stanton’s shoulder. This incident has significant implications for the Rays, who are currently battling for playoff positioning.
Aranda has been a standout this season, boasting a remarkable .316 batting average, alongside 12 home runs and 54 RBIs in 103 games. His on-base percentage stands at .394 with an .872 OPS, making him one of the most dangerous hitters in Major League Baseball.
In response to this setback, Cash has shifted Yandy Díaz to first base to cover for Aranda. In addition, the Rays have reinstated Ha-Seong Kim from the injured list and recalled Tristan Gray from Triple-A Durham. Newly acquired players Griffin Jax and Hunter Feduccia were also activated for Friday night’s game.
The Rays’ fans are left hoping for a swift recovery for Aranda, whose performance has been pivotal to the team’s success this season. With the playoffs approaching, every game counts, and his absence will certainly be felt on the field. Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.
