Swedish NCP Issues Urgent Report on Evolution AB Worker Rights

UPDATE: The Swedish National Contact Point (NCP) has just released its final report on a significant worker rights complaint against gaming giant Evolution AB, following urgent concerns from workers in Georgia. The complaint, filed by the Social Justice Center in Tbilisi on behalf of the Evo-Union, highlights troubling issues related to working conditions, pay, and the right to unionize at Evolution’s Tbilisi branch.

The conflict erupted in July 2024, when employees at Evolution’s Tbilisi studio launched a strike, protesting against low wages and unsafe work environments. This was exacerbated by claims of poor treatment from management and a refusal by Evolution to engage in constructive dialogue with the NCP. The dispute escalated, prompting an international review of labor rights, as it became evident that Evolution was allegedly not adhering to the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises.

Despite Evolution AB’s claims of maintaining competitive pay and a modern workplace for its over 22,000 staff globally, reports from workers and local officials paint a starkly different picture. Workers have reported incidents of workplace violence, including clashes with hired security during the strike. The NCP condemned any acts of violence and called for immediate action to ensure worker safety and rights.

In its findings, the NCP noted that Evolution’s reluctance to engage in talks hindered progress. While the Social Justice Center sought discussions, the company dismissed the potential for productive dialogue. As a result, the NCP proceeded with its review independently, revealing serious concerns over union suppression and safety violations.

Next Steps: The NCP has urged Evolution AB to resume negotiations with union representatives and strengthen its commitment to global labor standards. It has announced that it will reevaluate the situation in one year to assess any improvements or changes. The NCP remains open to facilitating discussions if both parties are willing to engage meaningfully.

This urgent report underlines the pressing need for Evolution AB to address its labor practices in Georgia, as the international community watches closely for developments. The implications of this case could resonate beyond Georgia, setting a precedent for multinational corporations operating in developing countries.
