School Meal Prices Set Amid Urgent Funding Issues for Services

UPDATE: The Churchill County School Board has just announced crucial changes to school meal prices during their meeting on July 24. In a unanimous decision, trustees set breakfast prices at $2 for all schools, while lunch prices were established at $3.25 for elementary schools, $3.75 at Churchill County Middle School, and $4 at Churchill County High School. This marks the first increase in meal prices since 2020, with the board keeping increases to $1 or less.

Amber Scholl, the director of dining services at Chartwells, expressed gratitude for this minimal increase, stating, “I think that small of an increase in a five-year increment will be very pleasing to most of the public.” She emphasized the importance of clear communication regarding free and reduced meal applications at back-to-school events, ensuring families understand their options, especially those experiencing financial changes.

Scholl outlined several exciting upcoming projects, including a cosmetic renovation and compliance updates for the middle school and Northside cafeterias. A new deli station featuring sub sandwiches and smoothie options will soon be available at Churchill County High School. Celebrated chef Jonathon Zaragoza is scheduled to return to the high school in October as part of Chartwells’ “Global Eats” program, while holiday meals are set to be served in November and December.

However, the meeting also revealed alarming news regarding funding. Superintendent Derild Parsons reported that the U.S. Department of Education has put a pause on over $203,468.83 in approved grant funding aimed at critical Title I, II, III, and IV projects. This funding was intended for essential initiatives, including new hire incentives and student tutoring. “The paused funds were designated for several critical initiatives,” Parsons stated.

With Nevada and 22 other states currently suing for the release of these funds, the timeline for resolution is uncertain, potentially extending over the next 18 months. Meanwhile, the district is exploring temporary measures to manage the financial shortfall. A plan is underway to identify necessary cutbacks while awaiting the restoration of funding.

Community engagement remains high, with the district reporting that lunch participation has doubled at both middle and high schools, driven by an increase in menu variety. The summer food service program also saw participation surge, from 800 to 1,600 weekly community meal boxes distributed.

The next school board meeting is scheduled for August 27 at 5:30 p.m. at the District Office, located at 690 S. Maine St. The board emphasizes the importance of these discussions as they navigate the challenges ahead.
