UPDATE: A beloved member of the Salado, Texas community, Branden Newman, faces a life-altering battle against glioblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer. His journey began with a persistent migraine that lasted over a week, leading to a shocking diagnosis that has united the community in an outpouring of support.
Branden, 31, and his wife Joanna, who have been married for 18 years, have shared a love story that took a dramatic turn in May 2025. Joanna, who works in the medical field, noticed something was seriously wrong when Branden’s migraine intensified and he failed to respond to her calls. After sending his brother to check on him, they rushed him to the emergency department, where doctors revealed a mass on his brain.
“My boss came and got me out of the OR and told me that they found a mass on Branden and I lost it,” Joanna recalled.
Following a craniotomy on May 8, surgeons successfully removed 90% of the tumor, but Branden faces ongoing challenges as the remaining mass is entwined around a crucial blood vessel. Currently, he is undergoing intensive treatment consisting of daily chemotherapy and radiation for six weeks, concluding on July 31, followed by weekly chemotherapy sessions for six months.
The Newmans initially sought enrollment in clinical trials but encountered obstacles. “We prayed that if the doors were supposed to open for that clinical trial that they would, and they didn’t, so we’re just trusting Him,” Joanna shared.
Community support has been overwhelming, with neighbors organizing meal trains and fundraising events titled “Boot Out Cancer.” Branden expressed deep gratitude, stating, “I cannot do this without the support of my community here in Salado.” The couple’s commitment to giving back to their community has made accepting help a humbling experience for Branden.
As they navigate this challenging period, the Newmans emphasize the importance of maintaining a positive mindset. “You gotta keep a very strong mind. You can’t let yourself get into a mental state of like I’m giving up,” Branden advised. Joanna added, “I think faith is the big thing that kind of carries you in these moments where you don’t understand why it’s happening.”
Despite the uncertainty ahead, their focus remains on supporting each other and embracing their community’s love. Joanna and Branden’s advice to those facing similar struggles is clear: “Just be really good to your community, give back.”
The upcoming fundraising event, the Branden BOOT OUT BRAIN CANCER, is scheduled for June 27, 2025, at Johnny’s Outback in Salado, with all proceeds supporting Branden’s medical expenses. This event is a testament to the spirit of solidarity that defines the Salado community.
As the Newmans continue their fight against cancer, they remain hopeful and determined. “We’ll overcome this too,” Branden declared, reinforcing their commitment to each other and their community.
