Plans for Nursery in Ollerton Withdrawn Amid Public Outcry

UPDATE: Controversial plans to convert a former place of worship into a nursery in Ollerton have been withdrawn following overwhelming public opposition. The application, submitted to the Newark and Sherwood District Council in September 2025, aimed to transform the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Bescar Lane into a childcare facility.

The proposal included enhancements such as improved washroom facilities, a new kitchen, car parking spaces, and two outdoor play areas, with intended operating hours from 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. However, it faced significant backlash from residents concerned about safety and environmental impacts.

Numerous objections were raised, emphasizing potential hazards on the single-track, poorly maintained Bescar Lane, which lacks pavements. Residents expressed fears about increased traffic and noise from the outdoor play areas. The Ollerton Village Residents Association voiced strong objections, stating that the scale of traffic generated by such a commercial venture would conflict with the residential nature of the area.

A report from Nottinghamshire County Council Highways, released on December 10, supported these concerns, recommending refusal of the application due to the road being ill-equipped to handle increased traffic safely. The report highlighted the heightened risk of conflict between vehicles and pedestrians in the area.

On Wednesday, December 17, in light of the mounting objections and official recommendations, the applicant officially withdrew the proposal, leaving many residents relieved but still concerned about future developments in their community.

As the situation unfolds, local residents are encouraged to stay informed about any new proposals that may arise. For further updates on planning developments affecting your area, visit the Public Notice Portal.

This urgent withdrawal underscores the importance of community engagement in local planning decisions, reminding residents of their critical role in shaping the future of their neighborhoods.
