Phillies’ Jhoan Duran Keeps No. 59 After Trade, Manager Relents

UPDATE: In a surprising turn of events, newly acquired closer Jhoan Duran will keep his cherished No. 59 jersey after being traded to the Philadelphia Phillies from the Minnesota Twins. Duran’s emotional connection to the number runs deep, as it holds sentimental value for both him and his family, including his wife, Aida Duran.

In a lighthearted exchange, Phillies manager Rob Thomson agreed to relinquish the number, which he wore during his coaching career. Duran expressed gratitude to Thomson, emphasizing the importance of the number that is even engraved in the family’s pool design back in the Dominican Republic.

Duran, 27, who boasts an impressive record of 16 saves and a 2.01 ERA in 49 appearances this season, reported to the Phillies’ dugout just before their three-game series against Detroit. This trade, finalized on July 26, 2023, not only marks a significant moment in Duran’s career but also showcases the lighter side of sportsmanship.

Thomson humorously noted that the only person unhappy with the number change is his wife, Michele, who will need to update her Phillies merchandise. “The number really doesn’t mean much to me,” Thomson said, adding, “But if it makes you feel better, I’m all-in.”

The exchange highlights the human element of professional sports while also underscoring the urgency of Duran’s transition to the Phillies, a team aiming for a strong postseason. With his new start, fans are eager to see how Duran’s performance will impact the team’s playoff ambitions.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Duran as he takes the mound wearing No. 59, aiming to make an immediate impact in the National League. The Phillies’ fans are excited, and with Duran’s proven track record, they have plenty of reasons to be optimistic moving forward.

Stay tuned for more updates on Duran and the Phillies as they gear up for a crucial stretch in the season.
