URGENT UPDATE: The Paws for a Cause Pantry is now serving more families with an expanded range of essential items at its new location in Tower City. The pantry, located at 729 East Grand Ave., now offers not just pet food but also groceries, hygiene products, and more, available to residents from Tremont to Halifax.
Launched in April 2023, the pantry aims to assist families facing financial strains, with no income checks required. “We don’t check income because everyone needs a break,” said founder Angie Bixler. The pantry operates on the first Thursday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon and 5 to 7 p.m., as well as the third Monday from 5 to 7 p.m.
Inside the pantry, visitors can choose from a wide variety of items, including breakfast foods, batteries, feminine hygiene products, and even seasonal goods. The pantry has a refrigerated section for fresh pet food and receives enough donations to keep its shelves stocked. The initiative has an outpouring of community support with 20 to 25 volunteers actively helping.
Local residents, like Ellen Tsopp and her daughter Shelley Starr, express gratitude for the pantry’s services. “It has helped me with getting sugar, detergent, and pet food. It is wonderful for pet food,” Tsopp stated, highlighting its impact on pet owners. Starr, a regular since 2020, has spread the word about the pantry, calling it “just a really good thing for the community.”
The pantry also participates in community outreach initiatives, including a pet vaccine clinic running from September 6 to November 1 for dogs and cats. A successful “Christmas in July” auction was held on July 25-26, further demonstrating the pantry’s commitment to serving the community.
As the demand for food assistance continues to rise, Paws for a Cause remains a crucial resource for families in need. With its mission to alleviate financial burdens, the pantry is poised to make a significant impact in the lives of its visitors.
