BREAKING: Patton High School in Morganton is officially fielding a varsity football team this fall after a year-long hiatus. Head coach Billy Whisenant announced the exciting news, confirming a solid turnout of 30-35 players at summer workouts throughout June and July, indicating the team is ready for both junior varsity and varsity competition.
Whisenant expressed optimism about the upcoming season, stating, “Our plan is to do both,” while acknowledging potential challenges with injuries that could impact team dynamics. He emphasized the critical need for upperclassmen to face the rigors of varsity football after a year limited to junior varsity play. “They want the challenge,” Whisenant added, highlighting the determination of his squad.
Last fall, Patton’s varsity program was suspended due to low participation, particularly among juniors and seniors. “My junior class last year, I had one (player),” Whisenant explained. Recruiting upperclassmen proved difficult as many had never played before. “Football is difficult to jump into,” he noted, recognizing the challenges faced by new players.
Despite these setbacks, the team is now in a stronger position. Whisenant noted that the players have grown and developed over the past year, having participated in eight games last season, which greatly benefited their experience. “They got a lot of reps last year,” he said, referring to the nine players who contributed to a successful junior varsity campaign, finishing with a commendable 5-3 record.
The current roster is still youthful, with only three seniors expected to lead a team that will still likely feature many ninth and tenth graders. Whisenant remains confident, stating, “The one thing you’ll see with my team is they fight… They hate to lose.” This competitive spirit, instilled by previous middle school coaches, sets the tone for the upcoming season.
As preparations ramp up, the community eagerly anticipates Patton High’s return to varsity football. Whisenant and his players are committed to making this season one to remember. Stay tuned for updates as the team gears up for its first game in August 2023!
