URGENT UPDATE: An alarming situation has emerged in Oklahoma City as a woman’s backyard has become a breeding ground for mysterious bugs, raising fears of a potential health risk. Wanda Delaney reported spotting up to 20 bugs in her yard early this morning, leading her to worry they could be dangerous kissing bugs linked to Chagas disease.
Delaney described the invasive insects as “really creepy,” noting their persistent presence. “They follow you, they land wherever, and they’re just all over,” she said, expressing her growing anxiety about the infestation. The bugs have been appearing more frequently, especially during the evening hours when the sun sets.
To address these concerns, KFOR reached out to experts at Oklahoma State University. Dr. Jonathan Cammack, an assistant professor and insect specialist, quickly identified the creatures as leaf-footed bugs after reviewing a photograph. “We typically see leaf-footed bugs in garden situations, like on tomato plants,” Dr. Cammack stated.
However, he cautioned that these insects can easily be confused with kissing bugs due to their similar appearance. “There are a bunch of species of insects that are closely related to kissing bugs that look very similar,” he explained. Both types often exhibit a black and red pattern, which can lead to misidentification.
Dr. Cammack emphasized the importance of proper identification. “If you’re unsure about a bug, collect it and send it in,” he advised, recommending that residents reach out to their local extension office for assistance.
While Oklahoma is home to two species of kissing bugs, which can carry health risks, Dr. Cammack reassured the public that there have been no confirmed human infections in the state. This information provides some comfort to concerned residents like Delaney, who are fearful of the bugs’ potential impact.
As the bug crisis unfolds, residents are urged to remain vigilant and proactive. If you encounter similar bugs, take immediate action by capturing them and contacting local experts for help. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story, as officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
